WIP - Kiss

At first I made a sketch of the position of the horse. The owner wanted the portrait to show the deep bond they all had - the horse and the humans. (The horse is a Finnish coldblood horse - some might say it is a plain looking breed of horse, but others swear it is the best breed there is.) So I thought of positioning the horse very near them, protecting them with his body and gently pressing his head against the kissing couple.
But making the drawing was a bit of a puzzle - I took the arch of the neck from one photo, the profile of the horse from another, the eye from a third and the ears from a fourth picture. Then I had to calculate the proportion of the horse and the humans when they were put next to each other, so that they would look believable.

In the next picture I have transferred the drawing to the suede matboard and put the basic shadows, higlights and ground color on the horse.

On the third picture I have worked a bit on the young couple also. The young man´s hair was a bit of a problem as I had no reference photo of his hair - well, except one where he was holding a fish he had caught and his hair was hanging in front of his face :D I had to do the drawing according to the instructions of the girlfriend. The color of her shirt is red because she told me she wears the color often. And somehow his shirt just became blue. I first painted it darker, but the darker color was not very visible so I made it lighter.

In the end I added some green on the background. This portrait was to represent their relationship and the colour of green is the color of spring and summer and hope. That is why I chose to do this into a summer picture instead of winter as was the original plan. They had gone through some tough times - both people and the horse - and so I thought the symbolism of the green was all the more important.

The horse, Porne, was neglected and mistrusting of people, yearning for a deeper connection with some special human he could trust. And he got what he needed - Noora came into his life and slowly brought this lovely horse out of its shell. The sulking, mistrusting horse transformed with the methods of horse-whispering into a beautiful, loving and trusting creature. She and the horse could almost read each others minds. They rode together without bridle and saddle, the purpose of the riding being joy and mutual trust. And then Joni came into the picture and the horse accepted him also as a special friend he trusts. Their story is a true wonder of trust and love and I sincerely hope this painting reflects this, even if only a little.

WIP - Suudelma

Ensin tein hevosen asennosta luonnoksen. Omistaja halusi, että kuva kertoisi siitä syvästä yhteydestä, joka heillä oli- niin ihmisillä keskenään kuin ihmisillä hevoseen. (Kyseessä on suomenhevonen, joka joidenkin mielestä on melko arkisen näköinen rotu, mutta toisten mielestä paras mahdollinen hevosrotu) Joten mieleeni tuli asettaa hevonen hyvin lähelle ihmisiään, suojaamaan heitä ruumiillaan ja painamaan päätään varovasti suutelevaa paria päin.
Mutta kuvan tekeminen olikin kuin palapelin tekemistä - otin kaulan kaaren yhdestä kuvasta, hevosen profiilin toisesta, silmän kolmannesta ja korvat neljännestä valokuvasta. Sitten minun piti laskea hevosen ja ihmisten väliset mittasuhteet, jotta ne näyttäisivät uskottavilta.

Seuraavassa kuvassa olen siirtänyt kuvan samettipohjalle ja maalannut perusvarjot, -valot ja hevosen pohjaväriä.

Kolmannessa kuvassa olen jo työstänyt hieman nuortapariakin. Nuoren miehen hiukset olivat hieman ongelmalliset tehdä, koska minulla ei ollut niistä lähdekuvaa - no, sitä kuvaa lukuunottamatta jossa hän piteli pyydystämäänsä kalaa hiukset kasvoillaan :D Minun piti tehdä piirros hänen tyttöystävänsä ohjeiden mukaisesti.
Tytön paidan väri on punainen, koska hän kertoi minulle pitävänsä punaisen värisiä vaatteita usein. Ja poikaystävän paidan väristä vain tuli sininen. Ensin maalasin sen tummemmaksi, mutta tumma väri ei näkynyt kovin hyvin. Siksi tein paidasta vaaleamman.

Lopuksi lisäsin vihreää taustalle. Kuvan tarkoitus oli kuvastaa heidän suhdettaan ja vihreä on kevään ja kesän ja toivon väri. Siitä syystä myös tein tästä kesäkuvan enkä talvikuvaa, kuten alunperin suunniteltiin. He olivat käyneet läpi vaikeita aikoja - niin ihmiset kuin hevonenkin - ja ajattelin että vihreän symbolisuus oli siksi sitäkin tärkeämpi.

Hevonen, Porne, oli hyljeksitty eikä luottanut ihmisiin ja kaipasi syvempää kontaktia ihmiseen, johon voisi luottaa. Ja hevonen sai toivomansa - Noora tuli sen elämään ja sai sen hitaasti ulos kuorestaan. Hapan, ihmisiin luottamaton hevonen muuttui hevoskuiskauksen metodein kauniiksi, rakastavaksi ja luottavaksi olennoksi. Tyttö ja hevonen pystyivät lähes lukemaan toistensa ajatukset. He ratsastivat ilman suitsia ja satulaa, ja ratsastuksen päämääränä oli ilo ja yhteinen luottamus. Ja sitten Joni ilmestyi ja hevonen hyväksyi hänet myös ystäväksi, johon voi luottaa. Heidän tarinansa on todellinen luottamuksen ja rakkauden ihme ja toivon todella, että tämä maalaus heijastaa tätä edes hiukan.
