Strawberry Squirrel

Last summer we were at our family´s summer cottage. We were sitting on the sea shore, eating strawberries, when something moved next to me. I looked and saw this tiny little baby squirrel hopping on the shore. He was absolutely fearless and we sat perfectly still when he stopped to look at us and then moved on. I could have touched him. Mommy squirrel was watching us from a nearby tree but did not seen to be alarmed. I got an idea. I took a strawberry and my camera and followed the little wee creature. He stopped to sit on a sunny spot and I sat down next to him. We must have been a meter apart at most. I put the strawberry on the ground between us. At first the tiny squirrel did not seem to be interested in it, but then he just hopped to the strawberry, took it between his front paws and started munching it. I took my camera and started clicking - and this little baby squirrel never budged. After a while he had eaten the whole big berry and decided to follow his mother who had all the time sat in the tree next to us. If next summer I see an squirrel eyeing our strawberries, I know he made it through the winter.

Orava ja mansikka

Viime kesänä olimme kesämökillä ja istuimme meren rannalla syömässä mansikoita. Huomasin jonkin liikkuvan rannassa ja näin pienen pienen oravanpojan hyppelevän kivikossa. Se ei pelännyt mitään ja istuimme täysin hiljaa, kun se pysähtyi katsomaan meitä ennen kuin jatkoi matkaansa. Olisin voinut koskettaa sitä. Äitiorava tarkkaili meitä läheisestä puusta, muttei vaikuttanut hätääntyneeltä. Sain idean. Otin mansikan ja kamerani ja seurasin pikku otusta. Se pysähtyi aurinkoiseen läikkään ja istuin varovasti sen viereen. Meillä ei varmaan ollut etäisyyttä metriä enempää. Laitoin mansikan maahan väliimme. Aluksi pikkuorava ei tuntunut olevan kiinnostunut marjasta, mutta sitten se hypähti mansikan luo, otti sen etutassujensa väliin ja alkoi mussuttaa. Otin kamerani ja aloin kuvata - eikä tämä pieni orava liikahtanutkaan. Pienen ajan kuluttua se oli syönyt koko ison marjan ja päätti seurata äitiään, joka oli koko ajan istunut viereisessä puussa.
Jos ensi kesänä näen oravan katselevan mansikoitamme sillä silmällä, tiedän että se selvisi talvesta.

Water lilies

Last summer we went to our friends´ summer cottage. One morning it was cloudy. I wandered to the lake shore with my camera and started zooming on some water fowl when I realized there were beautiful waterlilies right in front of me. Water lilies by Monet came to my mind and I took some pictures of them - and right then the sun came through the clouds, and the white flowers shone like snow on the deep blue lake. I thought I´d make a painting from the photograph but then I realized the photo was a piece of art on its own and decided to let it speak for itself.

Lumpeenkukat

Viime kesänä menimme vieraisille ystäviemme kesämökille. Eräänä aamuna oli pilvistä. Kuljin järven rantaan ja aloin kuvata vesilintuja, kun huomasin upeat lumpeenkukat aivan edessäni. Mieleeni tulivat Monetin lumpeenkukat ja otin kuvia lumpeista - ja juuri silloin aurinko tuli esiin. Sen säteet saivat kukat hohtamaan lumivalkoisina syvän sinistä järveä vasten. Ajattelin tehdä valokuvan perusteella maalauksen, mutta sitten tajusin, että kuva oli itsessään jo taideteos ja päätin antaa sen puhua puolestaan.
